| CWA students complete their core classes on-line through | ||||||||
OdysseyWare (grades 3-12) or through Calvert paper curriculum (grades 1-2 (all subjects); both interactive, challenging programs designed to meet Oregon State Standards. Rosetta Stone software is also used to offer students courses in over 28 foreign languages. Additionally, CWA Staff and students uses Google Apps for Educators, Moodle and several other Web 2.0 tools to create an engaging and individualized experience for students. Using laptop computers checked out to them at no cost, and high-speed internet supplied by families, students can complete their coursework in the time and place convenient to their unique needs. Each student is assigned a teacher/advisor, who offers individual support to the student through daily contact via computer and telephone, and through one-on-one meetings in the home a minimum of twice each month. Through these scheduled meetings with the advisor, both students and parents receive the support they need to ensure a high-quality learning experience. All coursework is graded by licensed teachers who are highly qualified to teach in the particular subject area. |
In addition to the on-line component, students are also |
invited to participate in enrichment classes taught on-site, health & fitness activities through 24-Hour Fitness, field trips and social activities and, at the high school level, “real world” experiences such as volunteering, internships and college courses. CWA also provides technical support, counseling, tutoring, and services for English language learners and students on Individualized Education Plans. |
| Programs | ||||||||
CWA is divided into 3 “schools”: Elementary (grades 1-8), |
High School (grades 9-12), and Early College Option (ECO) (by application for eligible students in grades 10-12). |
| Curriculum in grades 1-2, as well as math for grades 3-6, | ||||||||
is provided through Calvert Schools. The Calvert curriculum for 1st and 2nd grade is paper based with supplemental materials provided by the teacher. Curriculum for grades 3-8 is provided by OdysseyWare, an Arizona based company that has a long history of developing on-line curriculum. When space permits, elementary students can explore a foreign language using Rosetta Stone software. All curriculum is designed to meet the Oregon State Standards as defined by the Oregon State Department of Education. Parents and/or guardians in the elementary program administer their students’ coursework on a day-to-day basis, providing structure, guidance and academic support. The CWA teacher / advisor is available on a daily basis to answer questions, and support the parent in these goals. The Elementary School program works closely with the High School to ensure that students are prepared and ready to begin work toward earning a diploma by the time they enter 9th grade. |
| In addition to the on-line curriculum, students in the | ||||||||
Elementary School are invited to participate in on-site enrichment classes, such as reading workshops, fun math-based courses, and hands-on science labs. For physical education, students can participate in HOPSports program taught by CWA’s certified PE teacher, along with a 24-Hour Fitness trainer, at the 24-Hour Fitness Facility located below CWA. Students over age 12 are also eligible for a 24-Hour Fitness pass during the school year at no cost (must be accompanied by an adult if under 16). Students also gather several times each year for field trips and social events. Last year, we went to Oaks Park roller rink, the Oregon Zoo, and OMSI! |
| Curriculum for grades 9-12 is provided by OdysseyWare, | ||||||||
an Arizona based company that has a long history of developing on-line curriculum. Students in grades 9-12 can earn credit in 12 foreign languages using Rosetta Stone software. All curriculum is designed to meet the Oregon State Standards as defined by the Oregon State Department of Education. To view CWA’s Curriculum Handbook, click here. (It is stored on Edline also). |
| In addition to the on-line curriculum, students in the High | ||||||||
School are invited to earn elective credit through on-site enrichment classes, such as Leadership, Music & Lyrics, Stream Water Restoration Project and math tutoring, work sample sessions and test preparation courses. Student in good academic standing who have been enrolled at CWA for at least one quarter may take up to 6 credits in subject areas not offered by CWA at Clackamas Community College (CCC) at no cost. For physical education, students can participate in HOPSports program taught by CWA’s certified PE teacher, along with a 24-Hour Fitness trainer, at the 24-Hour Fitness Facility located below CWA. Students are also eligible for a 24-Hour Fitness pass during the school year at no cost (students must be accompanied by an adult if under 16). |
In addition to the North Clackamas graduation requirements, |
CWA high school students must complete a service-learning course, volunteering at least 40 hours with a nonprofit organization while learning about themselves, their community and the world. Students also complete an internship in the career area of their interest, earning a college credits through CCC’s “Smart Internship” program for the first 40 hours and up to 12 college credits for additional hours. |
High school students at CWA are self-directed learners |
who are prepared to set and meet goals toward successful completion of high school. Parents and/or guardians of high school students should be available to monitor students’ coursework, and to provide structure, guidance and academic support. Personalization of the diploma is paramount at CWA. Each student is assigned an advisor who meets with the student, and usually a parent, for an hour every other week to provide academic support and set goals toward meeting the student’s 4-year plan. The CWA advisor and CWA counselors are available on a daily basis to answer questions and support the student and parent in reaching these goals. |
CWA is pleased to offer an early college entrance program |
that allows academically qualified students to begin work on their college career at Clackamas Community College while still in high school. College credits earned apply to both the high school diploma and college studies. Students participating in the ECO program agree to complete the requirements for their North Clackamas High School Diploma concurrently with their college studies. ECO students are encouraged, but not required, to complete their associate’s degree. |
